I tried doing the dd command but when I reboot and hold option I do not see the usb drive come up. I formatted the usb drive Mac OS extended. Thanks for any help

S shifuimam macrumors newbie Jul 31, 2006 26 0 Aug 10, 2011 #2 The drive also needs to be formatted with GUID (not MBR). Have you tried installing OS X to your external hard drive and then attempting to boot off it?
