Boot to USB MacBook 5,2

Ok I have been trying to see if my white macbook can boot to usb. I tried doing the dd command but when I reboot and hold option I do not see the usb drive come up. I formatted the usb drive Mac OS extended. Thanks for any help

The drive also needs to be formatted with GUID (not MBR).

Have you tried installing OS X to your external hard drive and then attempting to boot off it?

You need to restore the image to the USB stick before you can boot off of it. It is completely different than dragging-and-dropping.
