B benwiggy macrumors 68030 Jun 15, 2012 2,651 527 Oct 13, 2013 #2 There's nothing in the .dmg format that flags the contents as "bootable", AFAIK. A Mac will boot to any physical volume that contains the necessary boot files. This is handled by the EFI.
