I downloaded the bootcamp drivers directly from the bootcamp assistant on my RMBP, but I get the message "This version of Boot Camp is not intended for this computer model."

Have I somehow got the wrong drivers, assuming ones do exist? Or is there a way of bypassing the model check?

Cheers.

other threads have suggested to load the individual drivers manually.

So I saw, but it doesn't allow it. Either get "You need elevated privaleges from setup.exe to execute this" or some other error about being unable to open the drivers.

Anyway, I uninstalled it and installed windows 7 instead that had no issues. Better operating system too.

The drivers installed fine for me. Not sure what the problem was in your case

The only issue I had was that the sound didn't work - but I think that was an EFI issue.
