I am seeking some advice/help regarding the Windows software I have.
I recently bought a Macbook Pro and am running it under Leopard. I wanted to install Bootcamp and Fusion today; however, I noticed that the version of Windows that I was given at the campus computer store (I have two CDs: one that reads XP Pro with Service Pack 2 and one that reads Windows XP Pro x64 edition; both CDs are labeled as June 2006 Systems CDs and noted to be a Media Set) appears to be incompatible, or at least not recommended, with Bootcamp.
I discovered this problem when I tried to run Bootcamp using the non-x64 CD, as I kept getting an error saying that the there was no disk to boot. Thus, I tried the other CD and it would boot a setup prompt but, upon realizing that 64 bit was not recommended, I cancelled that set up. After reviewing some older threads, it appears that the problem with the 64 bit version is that drivers won't work. However, I only plan to use Bootcamp primarily for Photoshop and SAS (a statistical program), so I wasn't sure whether drivers would be a problem for me.
So my questions are:
(1) Why won't the non-64 bit XP CD boot? Is it simply not an installation disk (i.e., do I only have the 64 bit version or are they two separate versions)? Basically, I don't even know what version of Windows I have because of the two CDs (they didn't come with packaging other than the activation keys).
(2) Would the lack of Apple drivers probably still cause a problem since I am not using Bootcamp to game?
(3) Though the 64 bit XP versions cause problems in Bootcamp, would they cause similar problems when opened using Fusion in Leopard?
I can check in with the computer store on Monday, but I was hoping to get the installs done this weekend. I'm really hoping I don't have to buy another version of XP, but it sounds like that might be my only option (the only other option I have for a Windows purchase through school is Vista ultimate 32-bit media and since I have heard less than flattering things about Vista, I was hoping to avoid it).
