I've been trying to walk my father, a new Mac user through a Boot Camp installation using this guide:

http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup.pdf

However, Page 13 never happens. He selects his bootcamp partition on page 11 and then it goes right to writing files to the disk. Because of this (and page 13 warns you about it).. your drive is not bootable. Upon reboot it says that there is a disk error.

So, then, I decide to have him delete the bootcamp partition and re-create it through the Windows XP installer, which then DOES allow you to select a format for the drive, We've tried NTFS and FAT (quick). Both times upon successful reboot after the initial DOS screen setup, he gets an missing or corrupt HAL.DLL.

Last I left him we ditched bootcamp and the installer was plugging away through a VMWare Fusion virtual machine. Has anyone figured out what's going on there? He has a XP Pro SP2 disc if that matters.

*Edit: here's a thread on the exact issue: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6940328
