Just in case somebody is looking for a solution like this:
I have a "Transcend TS256TSJM500 256 GB external SSD silber-metallic" connected to my iMac 27" 2011 through Thunderbolt. I wanted to install Windows 10 in a Bootcamp partition on this SSD. I searched the internet and after losing a lot of time with Winclone based suggestions, I found this working solution:
http://bleeptobleep.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/mac-install-windows-7-or-8-on-external.html
With this I managed to get Windows 10 Pro (version 1511 x64) installed. Then I also wanted to use this bootcamp Windows in a Parallels Virtual Machine. I'm still running Mavericks on my iMac and I tried the installed Parallels 10 first. It found the bootcamp partition, but was not able to finish the installation. Next I tried the newer Parallels 11 with the same negative result.
Searching the Internet for this scenario didn't bring up anything helpful, therefore I just uninstalled Parallels and tried VMWARE Fusion 8, with instant success! The virtual Windows 10 even was already activated, which was never the case with Parallels. I now have to get used to vmware but this should not be a bid deal. I'm really happy that I can use the external SSD as planned.
