If I want to create a windows bootcamp, would XP or Win7 be preferable? My main reason for creating the windows partition is for gaming

I would go with Windows 7 (and is what I run myself)

I also believe that from Lion onwards only Windows 7 is supported

Not quite, from the 2011 MBP's onward, and they originally came with SL.

I'd recommend 7 as well, it's a great OS.

Third vote for Win 7, which is so much better than XP. I've found Win 7 no slower than XP for gaming, and probably a little quicker in most respects.
Win 7 runs great on my 2010 2.4 13" MBP!

I booted Windows 7 64-bit onto my 2010 13'' recently and it runs really well, and games run well too even with the integrated GPU.

7. That's what I'm using right now. 2011 baseline MBP.

XP is great but if the machine is a dual core and has at least 2 gigs of RAM, 7 is vastly better (looks better also) than XP. Of course, I mean this from an aesthetic and usability standpoint for an average consumer.
