Bootcamp on separate drive?

I m very new to this whole Bootcamp thing so please be easy with me.

If I want to put a second drive in my MacPro and format it as XP do I need to use Bootcamp, or do I just format it and choose the XP drive at start up?

I do motion design and animation and I want to be able to have the best of both worlds in one box, but not have to have my main drive partitioned for OSX and XP, I guess I just want to keep them as separate as possible.
