BootCamp Or Not?

Hi all,

I'm pretty happy with my Macbook and I haven't installed the Windows XP yet because I don't see the need to it as I am beginning to Really Really like how the Mac OS X works !! It's Awesome..

But, out of curiosity and maybe just to have the Windows XP I have decided to install the Windows..!! So is that a good decision because I was told it is better not to as I will probably load the harddisk and I will face issues with viruses?!!

And if I want to install the Windows, where can I get that done? Because over the apple store they charge So much for that? Is there a way I could do it over the Internet or it must be done by a MAC specialist??

Yes Windows has viruses, you run windows you better protect it and to run Windows you need to own a copy.

If any virus were to find it's way to your XP install your OSX partition will stay safe. A Windows virus won't work on OSX. It's as simple as that. So who ever told you this has got it wrong.

If I were you I would do it my self. No need for a Mac specialist.
1. Install Bootcamp
2. Run Bootcamp. A guide will apear. You will need to burn a driver disk and create an XP partition on your harddrive. Then you insert your XP install disk. After a restart your Mac will begin the XP install. (it's all in the guide, just follow it)

When installing XP just double check you choose the right partition so you won't accidently erase your Mac partition. But it's kind of self-explanatory if you know how to read

But I guess I will hold back installing the Windows until I feel that I really need it because I am in no hassle to deal with viruses and etc,,

I would say that if you want to use windows, use a PC. I wouldnt waste a mac on windows! While bootcamp can put the Windows xp inferface on your mac, your risking gettingn windows viruses and messing up your hard drive by haveing 2 operating systems. In my oppinion, i would say no.

You could also consider running XP under Parallels (http://www.parallels.com). For most things it works really well (not 3D games, but some 2D games work well enough).

Make a backup of your VM and if you do get a virus, just restore the backup.

i had boot camp and have parallels. I prefer parallels but don't expect anything spectacular in performance. But its great for most everything.

I have Windows installed via Bootcamp because I'm a web designer. It doesn't adversely effect the hard drive at all. If you do happen to get a virus in Windows you won't get it in OS X and even if you did it won't effect OS X at all.

I have XP installed in an NTFS partition which is much more secure, it means you can't exchange files between OS's but I just use a flash stick for that.

In no way will having Windows XP installed on your Mac mess up your hard drive, that's a myth.
