What is the minimum partition size recommended for the Windows partition when installing Windows? How much space does Windows XP take up?

I have about 40 GB free but I intend to use the Windows partition only for Windows itself and Windows apps (and I don't think there will be many). All of my files and documents will be kept on the OS X "side". So I'd hate to partition a bunch of space that won't end up being used?

Any recommendations?

10GB should be more than enough for you then.

I believe a WindowsXP install (and some basic apps) tops out around 3.5GB.

my xp pro install is already taking up 4.5 GB and all I installed myself was AIM, Firefox, and another small program. I tried doing it with 5GB partition once and I could only install one game, so go with 10-15 GB depending on how large the few apps you install are going to be
