Bootcamp windows running on External Drive

I have a 17 inch Macbook Pro with a 500gb Hard Drive. I want to install windows 7 but only want to partition 50gb on my internal drive to windows. I bought a mac/pc compatible 750gb External (western digital passport) and was wondering if its possible to use that space for windows also as like a hard drive extension?
