So I had this customer with a brand new, Macbook Pro 17". As a System Manager, I picked the Macbook Pro up and went on with re-installing the Macbook Pro from a external harddisk that has an Snow Leopard image on it via FW800.
I connected the harddisk to the Macbook Pro, held the option key (also known as the alt-key) as usually and the image on the external harddrive appeared. After that, things got worse. After selecting the image, the Apple logo appeared. It just froze.
After that, I tried it with an official Snow Leopard DVD. Same thing. After that, I tried it with the installation DVD that came with the Macbook Pro. And that worked, surprisingly.

I never had this issue before with any Macbook (although this is the first 17" we've had coming through) and we even returned it to the shop. The internal harddrive was replaced, but the issue remained.

Has anyone here had similar issues with booting the most recent Macbook Pro 17" (the i5 with the nVidia 330M) from external media other than the DVD's that came with the Macbook? It would be a shame if Apple decided that booting from an external harddrive is not done anymore, since a installation only takes around 10 minutes from the external harddrive (compared to >20 min from the DVD). Plus, it would be quite annoying having to store and sort all of those DVD's per Macbook Pro series because they wouldn't install from anything else anymore.
