I am using a iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017)
3.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4
I am running Monterery 12.0.1

For some months I was having trouble that I thought might be related to the fusion drive. I migrated to an external SSD in place of the fusion drive. I am not sure if it was related, but I received occasional notices that I was running low on disk space on the fusion drive, and my computer would grind to a halt when that happened. The machine was very slow to boot all the way up.

Since the move to an external SSD everything is faster, and I should have done this years ago.

At the time I made the change the largest compatible SSD I could purchase locally was 1TB. By compatible I mean USB 3 type C. (I live in the boondocks. I ordered a larger one online, but it still isn’t here.)

I have Dropbox with lots of media files. Because I was worried about filling up the SSD, I left it where it was, on the fusion drive. That is, instead of using the default, SSD/user/jayhawkraven, my dropbox folder is located on fusiondrive/user/jayhawkraven.

Everything seems to work fine right now, but I wonder if this could cause some problems in the future.

Is there any reason I shouldn’t erase the fusion drive and just use it as permanent storage of files? Does it need to be a bootable drive?

Thank you for your experience, wisdom, and knowledge.

If the fusion drive is still bootable, I'd leave it alone (as a "bootable" drive).

You always, always, ALWAYS want to have "a second bootable drive" somewhere close by.

What if your external boot SSD fails?
