I just purchased a SSD for my 2010 MBP...and while I was upgrading my HDD, I thought I might as well upgrade the OS and try out ML as well.

Has anyone tried booting from ML install USB on 2010 (or other older models of) MBP? Is there any reason NOT to be able to?

I've clean installed Mountain Lion on 2009 13" and a 2010 13" just fine from a USB.

Shouldn't be a problem. Just be sure to create the bootable USB drive correctly before wiping anything! :)

You should not have any issues although booting from a USB thumb drive is pretty slow.

Thanks! do you think using an SD card will help?

Thanks! I researched online and it seems like Diskmaker software is the best (and only?) way to go...do you have any suggestions?

Check out MacRumors' very own article on creating a bootable Mountain Lion USB, here.

I just used the stock Disk Utility, but Lion Diskmaker looks like a good tool.

Thanks! I can't believe I didn't come across this article...guess I didn't search hard enough
