If I hold option and choose the ssd then the computer boots up fine. If I restart and don't hold option I get a grey screen for about 30-40 seconds and then I get the screen shown in the picture. I followed the tutorial at life hacker and it said to delete everything but the user folder from the original hard drive and the computer would boot automatically from the ssd but that doesn't seem to be happening. Does anyone know of a solution for this?

Considering the SSD works fine, I'm thinking your startup disk isn't selected... Try holding the option key to boot to the SSD, then go to "system preferences --> startup disk" , click network startup (to ensure de-selection), then click on your ssd.
