Bootup/screen resolution annoyance

On my PMG5, during bootup, it places my monitor (15" samsung LCD) at 640x480. It switches to 1024x768 once the grey screen with the apple is gone. Unless I'm booting from a CD, it will remain at 640x480. Which can be quite annoying because if I'm trying to repair permissions, it can be very annoying. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks
