I have upgraded my RAM to 16gb, removed mechanical HDD and optical drive and replaced both with two 500gb SSDs, but boot still lags. I use one as tye main boot up drive and the other one as internal storage. What can I do to improve boot up time and overall speed? Is raiding an option?

The SSD should NOT be connected to the optical bay connector.
Use that one for the platter-based data drive.

One other thing:
Did you go to the startup disk preference pane, and reset the SSD to be "the new boot drive" ?

By never shutting your Mac down, you won't have to worry about boot up speed. Just let it sleep.
