I don’t like how the palm trees look generated though. They don’t look real enough.

Yeah the wind effect is not consistent - it seems each frond is swaying randomly.

Maybe the devs need to spend more time staring at actual palm trees on a tropical beach??

Despite the inconsistent wind effect I get by with a little help from my fronds.

I can see why it was probably difficult to implement. The thing about being on a beach during the day is that it gets BRIGHTTTT, so you kinda expect that when you start the environment. Makes sense that they hid the sun behind clouds cuz there's no way the OLEDs would be able to deliver.

The waves are also not great and kinda hard to not notice since they're front and center, but even video game engines have trouble rendering realistic waves when rolling onto the shore.

I wonder what the graphical processing overhead is or how much ram they allocate for environments.

I don't think it's being generated live, otherwise we should be able to walk around more than two steps.
I think it's just a 360º video playing in the background.

It isn't a video - 360 video only gets you the immediate camera perspective (You can't move your head around inside the video.)

The foreground elements are modeled 3d objects to let you move your head around (and closer to the sand.) The further out you go it becomes a skybox (360 video) as your perspective changing matters less. The same way 3d video games have been built since Mario 64.

You can only move a few feet as that is the only part they have modeled. The animations are likely canned because there is no point in wasting CPU time doing water physics simulations and wind simulations when you can store 30 minutes of prefabbed animations in a few hundred KB.
