borderlands co-op saving issues

my husband and I are having issues with saving our co-op game. We both have an xbox live account which we both sign in while playing the game. We can save our game and exit but once we go to play the next day (both being signed in) only my husband who is first player has his character and his level. mine is back to 1 again, which makes the game a lot less fun since you are so behind. we didn't even get a chance to even really play the game. We have borderlands 2 now, which we were hesitant to get based on our previous experience with the first borderlands, but we have not had any issues with saving. We finished the game and have played it for so long we would like to try again with the borderlands. Has any one else even had this issue? and now how we could fix/get around this issue? we have talked to the people at some game stores as well as a couple gamers we know but no one seems the know what we are talking about. Any advice would be insanely great. Thanks!
