My wife wants to buy me speakers for my birthday/Christmas, and she has heard about the Bose Companion 20. Does anyone have any experience with these speakers, or any other recommendations?

Harman/Kardon soundsticks. Save some $ and get a full 2.1 system. :)

Or if you are stuck on Bose, I have the Companion 3 SII that sound nice for movies and gaming. Music isn't half bad either.

2.1 is not always superior to a 2.0 set up.
2.0 will be better for music and daily stuff while 2.1 will shine for thumping sound movies.

honestly with that money, you can get a "BETTER" sounding speakers.
BUT I think companion 20 looks nice, small, pleasurable sound, neat and will be satisfactory to many people. We all know someone is going to bash Bose in this thread but they are not horrid bad.
you will enjoy them. I have the companion 3 and a 20.

Unless you intent to produce music, buy and enjoy. Never come back to this threads.

Just a thought

Controversial suggestion here from me. I was in a similar situation and I went a little left field. I purchased the Bose Soundlink. This works well with my MBP either over bluetooth or via the aux cable. It also enables me to use the speaker for travel with my MBP/iPhone etc. Sound is good and the portability factor is great. Also good if you ever do presentations and want to ensure you have speakers for any embedded video/audio etc.

I bought a pair of these yesterday for my macbook + cinema display setup.

Looks wise they are plain I'd say. Good material, nice match colour wise but lack any real flair. Not cheap looking, just boring in the flesh.

Sound wise I was happy with the detail and the bass of the sound (I aint no audio expert, and I am not willing to have a multi component setup in the space I have). However they lacked any warmth and I sort of was too aware of where the sound was coming from direction wise. Like when I was between the two speakers one would always sound louder than the other. Hard to explain, almost very clinical.

I am unsure whether to keep them. Mainly because I think I am better off with a USB setup that allows me use a usb on my monitor saving me to plug the cable in and out of my laptop everytime (and its black, the other cables are white etc).

If you can swing it, get the ZeppelinAir.

I have it hooked to an airport express, now it works like a charm and the music is pure ear candy. Was having issues with it wirelessly hooking up and dropping out of the airport extreme.

Amazing system for its size.
