I bought a first gen mini at the Microcenter for 223+tax, it had definite signs of wear, damage on a corner showed definite droppage but the biggest issue was the lightining port wouldn't charge unless the cord was connected in one specific way. I didn't want to return it because they didn't have any other open box iPad to swap with.

Checked Apple's website & it still was covered under warranty until July, so i took it to the Apple store the same day i bought it. They took a second to plug it in, noticed the same issue i did, said hold on and ill get you a new one.
10 min later i was walking out with a brand new scratch free iPad mini.

That's my story, take from it what you will. I love Apple!

P.S. I normally have very good experiences with Open Box items at the Microcenter, (i got my iPad 3, a laptop & several other items from there open box and they were immaculate) i was very surprised they would sell an item in this condition.

You are lucky I think. You got a cheap iPad mini pretty much.

lucky I guess, but with risk.
I think Apple sells refurb ones for $249. that's with full warranty, new battery, and new shell.

Touché, that must be relatively new. Still they don't have any 16gb wifi only iPads in the refurb store currently, so I think I made out quite well.

It's been that any for many years. I got my daughters iPod Touch from the refurbished store (2 generation) many years ago and it was free shipping back then.
