between flesh and thought
I do wedding photography for work. I have been working off a asus pro art 32 4K. Not the ucx. Great monitor still. When I look at an xdr my eyes get happy.

I missed out on a crazy good deal of an m1 mini plus xdr, and have been kicking myself since trying to find a similar deal. (Not possible. The mini was maxed.)

Recently found an open box xdr at micro center for just under $4k. I bought it as I have not seen a better deal since. Got the stand for $850. If I keep this I’m going vesa arm and returning pro stand.

Here are my problems.

1. Side by side, the xdr looks better, but like only 15-25% better. But if I stare hard the gap widens if I back off they seem fairly close.

2. I can’t use my Thunderbolt Display as a second monitor. Which means I’ll want to jerry rig an led Cinema Display with adapters for the same feel until the next mini is released. I don’t want to use the pro art as a second. Two big and distracting next to the xdr.

3. An xdr refresh may be right around the corner. My guess is the a13 will bring Face ID or whatever to the xdr. This will bring current xdr prices down. Or it might not at all.

My positives…

1. I like the images on it better. I love the confidence the calibration and auto calibration tech confer. I like skin tones on it better and trusting the skin tones is kind of big. This is all using the photography setting. (But the truth is I’ve been working on out of the box monitors for years. There is no reason I need to change. )

2. My hope is sitting in front of the xdr will make long hours of editing more pleasant. If I think of the the xdr as “my office”, then spending more on “where I live” at work makes sense. I’m somewhat neuro-divergent (obsessing over this) and so making my work space as pleasant as possible might support longer more relaxed editing sessions.

I think I’m just having a tantrum because I missed out on a good deal. I think deciding on whether to keep it or not is causing more problems then I intended it to solve. If the xdr refresh hit by jan and I could still sell the panel for what I paid I don’t think I would care as much. But I have a feeling the refresh is coming with a price drop.
