I swear I remember reading an article that said if you bought the original iphone a few weeks before the 3g came out, you could basically turn in your old iphone, get the 3g and actually get a refund (if you get the low price ones).

For example I paid $400 at first and now the 3g is $200 and when they came out the att rep said just bring in your old iphone and we'll exchange it and give you $200 back.

Am I completely wrong in this?

i believe the cutoff date was may 31
buy one after that, and your getting a refund if you upgrade to a 3g

Actually I believe this was a "rumor". Try and see if you can actually dig up any Apple released document to support this.
