Had about 2000 photos from like 2009, on my old macbook pro. I figured photo stream would have them all once I logged in the new macbook pro I just bought, but I'm guessing I did a terrible mistake of not saving each image?

correct? Or is there a way to get these photos back?

(btw I erased everything from my old macbook and sold it.)

I only get photos from like July 2014....

help please, really important family photos there.

That's neither what photo stream is for or does. It is not meant to be a way to backup or transfer photos from an old device to a new one.

Does using My Photo Stream substitute for using iCloud Backup or iTunes to back up my photos?

No. Photos in My Photo Stream are saved on the iCloud server for 30 days. To save or back up these photos, you must save them from My Photo Stream to your iOS device. Select the photos and choose Share > Save Image. You can then back up your photos using iCloud or iTunes.

Unless you have your originals somewhere, your pictures are lost forever. Sorry.

if you haven't been backing up (ie time machine), this is a huge reminder: always have your data in (at least) 2 places. time machine is extremely easy to use, and external drives are cheap these days.

backup. no one should lose anything anymore...
