My friend bought his iphone at walmart for $700 on straighttalk a while ago. He will be moving back to Japan and doesn't know what he can do with his iphone. Will he still be able to purchase minutes from the straighttalk website or is there a way to keep his phone working?

The iPhone 5 purchased from Walmart is a Verizon iPhone 5 and its SIM/GSM portion is Factory Unlocked meaning your friend can just take it to Japan and start using it with a GSM carrier there...all he has to do is get a SIM card from a Japan carrier of his choice, since Verizon iPhone 5 supports many LTE markets, his iPhone may even get LTE support from a Carrier in Japan.

He doesn't need to keep refilling as the iPhone will not "Roam" in Japan as Straight Talk doesn't support such things, but should be return to USA later he can simply buy a straight talk refill and continue using his iPhone just like he did up until now.

Your friend just has to figured out which frequencies the Japanese companies use. Different companies may operate at different area's of the spectrum.
