Just got a brand new 32gb iphone 3gs from apple on warranty because of problems with my old phone.

I haven't put my sim in yet. Just comes up with the screen that says "install a sim card to activate".

I have an att sim card to use if need be.

I want to jailbreak and unlock this phone.

How do I see what bootrom I have?

What steps do I take to jailbreak with ios4? Or should I stick with 3.1.3?

I have a mac.

Thank you.

You cannot JB or unlock it for 4.0 . Only if you stay on 3.1.3 you can use spirit to JB and ultrasnow to unlock.
But you can only upgrade to official 4.0 not a JB or custom one.
You cant downgrade it to 3.1.2 either since you prob dont have its shshs saved thru cydia.

I don't want to activate it through att unless I have to because I don't want to get the auto data plan.

In order to activate it you just gotta put a valid AT&T simcard in and plug it to itunes.
You wont have to pick a data plan or anything, it will just activate and you can give the sim back to whoever let you use it. It wont make any changes or additions to his account.
And only then after you activated it you can run spirit to JB it on 3.1.3 and then install ultrasnow from Cydia to unlock.

Ok, cool.

Will using spirit rather than pwnagetool interfere with my ability to jb ios4 in the future?

Thanks alot guys! I am super excited about this and these fast responses are awesome.

No, in the future when a new JB is out you could JB 4.0+ with it no prob.
You cant even use Pwnage right now since your device is not compatible yet.

The first thing it say's on the spirit page is not to use it with itunes9.2

That is the version I have. :(

Why can I not use pwnage following this link?

http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=5432

You can downgrade your itunes to the previous version in order to use spirit if you want.
To use that tutorial link you need to be already JB on 3.1.2 without a tethered JB in order to update to custom 3.1.3 created with pwnage.
If you want you can try it anyway but I'd figured I'd save you the half hour or so :D

Alright thanks. I will downgrade and use spirit.

How do I downgrade to 9.1?

Will jb using spirit make it so att won't auto assign me a data plan?

Nope, that has nothing to do with AT&T not adding a data plan to your account.
They know the minute you put your simcard in a cellphone with what device you are accessing their network thru.
And they do random scans to find users that have iphones with no data plans in their account and automaticly add one in. Nothing you can do about that but hope they dont find out soon.

If you've already upgraded to iTunes 9.2 on the computer you sync with, you cannot go back. It will not recognize your library and tell you that it was created with a newer version of iTunes.

you have to rename your itunes library.itl file. its a very easy process to downgrade itunes.
