About 6 months ago I picked up a 6TB HGST Deskstar NAS drive on sale to use as my Time Machine Drive after I filled my current 3TB WD Red drive. This morning I finally swapped the drives and it's telling me the drive is unreadable. When I use Disk Utility, the partition button is greyed out. This drive is attached to my Mac Pro via USB.

Can anyone tell me what's going on and how to fix? Thanks!

Try Erasing the entire drive for Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format first, then after completion then try to Partition.

Thanks! Since my MP is still under AppleCare I called them, we did a screen sharing session and that's exactly what the fix was. As opposed to some other drives I've gotten in the past, these come completely unformatted so they need to be erased. That along with the new(er) disk utility interface and the unclear (IMHO) process of erasing first, is what messed me up.

Now all I have to do is wait another few hours for the initial 1.56TB back up to complete ;)
