Dear All,
I am writing to ask for your advice. I have a brand new iMac 27 inch bought online from the Apple Store in November 2016. Australia .I upgraded to the high end of the specifications see attach the link of the model where it has:

https://support.apple.com/kb/SP731?locale=en_AU I think this it

4.0QC /16GB 1TB FD M390 WLKB

due to medical reasons over the last 7 years, cancer it has not been used and is still in the box. I went to the Apple Store today asking if it was still good to use and he said to me that it has high specs you have and you can’t upgrade it to like that any more as he looked up a serial number to see what we have unfortunately don’t have the receipt but I can get it from the online store Again as they have all our records with the email address. My question is whether to start to use it or do I still keep it in the brand-new box. Thinking in 20 years it may be worth something and leaving it for my children. It has not been used so why bother opening it.

if I do use it, it will be mainly for using Microsoft 365 application so I can have all my emails and acrobat subscription and indesign subscription and setting the web that’s pretty much it

I was advised I couldn’t upgrade it to the latest update in Apple only the one previous, but he was telling me he still using his MacBook Pro in 2015 it’s fine so I’m just I suppose looking for some luck in my life, and hopefully this has hit lottery for my children but it’s nice to Dream.

It will run the latest operating systems, Monterey and Ventura - you just need to use OCLP to load them. It is a powerful machine, especially if it's at the top end of the upgrade options - the i7 4.0 is 4 core but 8 threads - I guess you'll need to turn it on to find out the full specs if you can't remember exactly. The chances that it will be worth more in the future are very slim, unless you're talking about your grandkids / great grandkids. Unless you've got a really nice computer now, then I'd get it out and enjoy it - the screen is great.

Thank you so much I appreciate your response. 1 will try and get the specs again he was able to look them up from our serial number and was quite impressed. I think you’re right we should take it out of the box and start to use it. he said I could use Monterey only but from what you’re saying above and I’m assuming Ventura is the latest just use a OCLP to load them.

sorry to ask what is OCLP? Again thank you

My kids are 6 and 10

update, I just looked it up on Google that looks completely over my head. I would need someone to do it for me you don’t know anybody here in Perth Australia. Thanks

[Sorry, my error - I didn't clock that you said it would run Monterey - I needed to use OCLP to load Monterey as I'm running 2011, 2013 and 2014 27" iMacs.]

OCLP is very straightforward to use (the latest version has most things automated), but you can save that for a bit as your iMac will already work with Monterey (which is great). I don't know if the serial number lookup will give all the specs (including upgrades) or just the generic specs for that model. Simplest way is to click the Apple icon in the top left of the screen and select the first option 'About this Mac'. Are you new to Macs? Coming from Windows? If so, you might want to install your favourite browser to keep things familiar. You can easily set up separate logins for your family members, with limits for the kids.

If you bought the iMac in 2016, it's actually a "2015-design" iMac.
Apple didn't release any new iMacs in 2016.

So... having said that... there's no point in keeping an 8-year-old iMac in the box any longer.

Either sell it (you're not going to get much more for a "new-in-the-box" one than you would for a "moderately-used" one) or give it away to relatives.

Thinking in 20 years it may be worth something and leaving it for my children.
20 more years in the box won't raise its value any higher. But you can contact a few Tech-Youtubers and ask them, if they are interested in buying a sealed iMac with your specs? Maybe they offer enough to upgrade to a new M1 iMac, which absolutely outperforms the old machine. Otherwise start using it now.

The “someday” value of a new-in-the-box product is mostly going to be for a “First edition” or other iconic version of a product. If I have a new-in-the-box iPhone 3G for example, it might be worth a few hundred. But a new-in-the-box iPhone 2G recently sold for over $60,000. I agree that a 2015 iMac probably won’t ever have that level of collectability to gain much value, at least not in the next 20 years.

A YouTuber might be your best bet for that, like others suggested. Other than that - just use it.
