the actual process of jailbreaking and having the cydia will not slow down your phone whatsover. Depending on what you install after can indeed slow down preformance.

So for 4.02 users, is there a specific way to upgrade to 4.1 to ensure a future successful jailbreak?

There is no reason to rush into an upgrade.
If you can't wait and will need to unlock, be sure to use TinyUmbrella to update your iPhone 4 keeping your current baseband.

4.1 installs a new as yet unlockable baseband.

I just received an replacement iPhone4 from an Apple Retail Store. I figured I was screwed until the rep told me to update my phone when he handed it to me.

Fat chance!

Ok I had 4.0.2 jailbroken, and checked the "make my life easier" on Cydia. I restored my phone and upgraded to 4.1....is there any I can go back and jailbreak my phone again?

Since 4.0.2 can not, at this point, be jailbroken yet, I assume you mean 4.0.1.

That being said, yes, you can downgrade a d jailbreak. Unlock, not as of this moment.

Ultrasn0w unlocks all basebands except the new 5.14.xx baseband installed by 4.1 firmware.

The newest jailbreak will JB 4.0.1, for your iPhone 4 but not 4.0.2 or 4.1

If you update your baseband, you cannot downgrade it on an iPhone 4

can we downgrade from 4.0.2 to 4.0.1 or 4.0?

Only if you have hashes saved for those firmwares.

If you don't know what hashes are, Google "SHSH" and do some reading.
Also, Google "Caching Apples's Signature Server" and read that.

i got my phone on 4.0.2 from apple so i guess i am out of luck here?
