Hi,

Picked up a new iPhone 4 today from Apple store it's factory unlocked. However, I can't get it to downgrade firmware from 4.2.1 to 4.1 so I can jailbreak it using Limera1n.

I tried the method of altering the hosts file but that doesn't work, believe the issue is I don't have a SHSH file from previous firmware.

What options do I have now? I understand there's a tethered jailbreak but I'd prefer not to do that.

Thank you for your input.

So I'm out of luck at this point for non-tethered jailbreak? That's very disappointing!

Correct you need the SHSH. Apple isn't signing 4.1 anymore, so saving the shsh for 4.1 is not possible. You have to to wait for an untethered jailbreak.

I don't claim to be any expert, as I didn't even know what the shsh was until I read this thread, but I downgraded my iPhone 4 to 4.1 just by downloading the ispw, dfu the phone and option restore in iTunes. I didn't even need tinyumbrella or recboot. It worked, and is working, perfectly. Maybe it was just dumb luck.

You can only do this, when Apple is still signing the firmware on their servers.

I tried the same thing tonight and won't work anymore. I couldn't even save the blobs since Apple isn't signing 4.1 anymore. I heard people were still able to do this a few days ago but I guess Apple has finally cut the cord.
