Last year i bought a 2010 15'' i5 MacBook Pro. It was running extremely slow out of the box. Due to chronic laziness, and this just being a backup thats rarely used, I haven't taken it into the Genius Bar, or called Apple. I googled the issue and found and it seems like a new hard drive is the answer. but would apple ship a macbook pro with a faulty hard drive?

Yes. They ship 4-5 million macbooks each quarter, even with some amount of quality control there will be a few that have defects right out of the box.

Thanks. I will replace the hard drive. Is there a brand you recommend?
