Bought a new series 9 today and when opening it I noticed that the watch was completely dead. its so dead that even the reset doesn't work
(holding down side button and crown)

When putting the watch on the charger that came with it I am greeted by this screen for a few seconds and then the screen goes blank. is the watch actually charging? if not has anyone experienced this and know how to fix it? Haven't even been able to get it to power on so I can set it up.

Just had same issue, a couple of hours in the charger took care of it.
That’s what happened when I unboxed my gold stainless steel Apple Watch Series 6 after it arrived at my doorstep. It came all the way from the East coast to the West coast as it took an entire week to come, so all that transit time made the Watch battery depleted on arrival.

My S1 from BBY still had battery and all my watches I bought them new. Just make sure to put your new Apple Watch on the charger for at least half an hour to an hour before you pull your iPhone to pair it.

One week transit time is not enough to deplete the battery, it must’ve sat longer at the warehouse. I have three watches that I rotate wearing. if it’s 60% charged when I power it down a month later it will be about 40%.

Could be. That also explains why the purchase date appears on Apple’s service coverage lookup page seems a bit earlier, had to correct it with AppleCare when I found out about it. It was a doorbuster deal for $245 which is rare for a stainless steel Apple Watch, to be marked down to the price of an Apple Watch SE.

Of course it might have been in the distribution center for months.
