Hello People,

I have two questions regarding my internet setup, which I rely on for much of my work. I am living in quite a remote part of Brazil so I am in need of some serious mac advice. I need to be online for much of my work. Here everyone uses PCs!

As it’s my only option, I connect to the net via a PCMCIA dongle called Yiso C893, a kind of PC Card used for the broadband mobile connectivity service ‘Vivo Zap 3G’, It works using mobile phone network technology (Vivo is the mobile phone company). When it runs OK it can it can approach a speed of max 2.4MB/S. No mac drivers are available on the CD but can be downloaded from the card manufacturer’s site (http://www.luxicomwireless.com/suporte/). (If anyone has time to look at the driver, it downloads when you click 'desejo instalar um modem pela 1a vez' then mac OSX 10.4 ou mais recente) Once installed the ‘YISO Wireless 1XEVDO’ appears in the list of modems in network prefs, it connects ok for amout 5-10 mins then disconnects and alerts ‘WWAN PC Card Unplug Notice’ as though I have disconnected the card. In the connection log you get this:

Sun Oct 7 12:00:42 2007 : Starting Apple Verizon Support CCL
Sun Oct 7 12:00:42 2007 : Connecting to Network
Sun Oct 7 12:00:45 2007 : Serial connection established.
Sun Oct 7 12:00:45 2007 : Using interface ppp0
Sun Oct 7 12:00:45 2007 : Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cu.wan001
Sun Oct 7 12:00:50 2007 : PAP authentication succeeded
Sun Oct 7 12:00:51 2007 : local IP address 189.0.157.44
Sun Oct 7 12:00:51 2007 : remote IP address 200.220.227.217
Sun Oct 7 12:00:51 2007 : primary DNS address 200.220.227.100
Sun Oct 7 12:00:51 2007 : secondary DNS address 200.142.130.10
Sun Oct 7 12:07:10 2007 : Hangup (SIGHUP)
Sun Oct 7 12:07:17 2007 : Connection terminated.
Sun Oct 7 12:07:17 2007 : Connect time 6.5 minutes.
Sun Oct 7 12:07:17 2007 : Sent 2103 bytes, received 3458 bytes.
Sun Oct 7 12:07:17 2007 : ioctl(TIOCSETD, TTYDISC): Device not configured
Sun Oct 7 12:07:17 2007 : ioctl(TIOCNXCL): Device not configured(6)
Sun Oct 7 12:07:17 2007 : tcgetattr: Device not configured
Sun Oct 7 12:07:17 2007 : disconnect script failed

And the connection fails. Can anyone help? If there’s no way around this I am considering running some kind of virtual PC app to try and use the proper software that came with the modem. Or even... buying a PC :(
If anyone can offer any advice I would be extremely grateful as I am getting to the point of it becoming a major stress. I don’t want to buy a PC… ever! Heheh

Thanks in advance :)
