Bricked iPhone 3g

I just bought an iphone 3g on ebay. I went ahead and did a reset of all settings. For six hours now, it has been stuck on the apple logo and the spinner is frozen. Periodically, it will reboot itself only to get stuck in the same place. I did some research and have been trying for the past two hours to get it into DFU mode but no matter what I do, iTunes will NOT recognize the phone whatsoever. I'm honestly at my wits end.

Any suggestions?

Has anyone had to take the phone in to the apple store? If so, how much did they charge you?

Was the phone working before you did the "reset all"?
Try putting in DFU mode and try another computer and another USB wire to makes sure that's not the prob.
Also was it supposed to be JB and unlocked? Do you know if they installed the ipad BB on it?
