Bridged Ethernet Connection- Thunderbolt

I have recently acquired an  Thunderbolt to Ethernet dongle for my 2012 Mac mini to allow me to set up a 'bridged' ethernet connection for audio streaming duties. Sounds great! but i have lost the 'wake from sleep' functionality. Can anybody advise whether this would be expected or do i have a problem?

grateful for any pointers
 
I believe this is to be expected. Do you have get a proper IP address for the end device in this setup?
