Caveat: My Catalina install is on an external SSD drive.

Downloaded Big Sur, no issues, but got an error when it tried to install. So, cancelled that, but manually select the install file sat in Applications and install started smoothly ok.
After about 4 reboots initiated by the install, the progress bar was millimetres from the finish and did not move any more. After a search I saw that people had done a hard reboot and so I did that but the iMac only booted using the internal instance of Catalina ( the iMac has an install of Catalina on the slow internal 1TB hard drive ( hence using the faster external SSD )

Could not find the instance of the SSD in start up disks so couldn't boot from it ( it only had the data partition displayed and the internal HD ).
So I have done a restore of Catalina from my back drive.
For the time being I will wait, but if anyone can shine any light on why it didn't work and boot up correctly it would be appreciated.
It also seemed to rename my Mactintosh SSD drive to be called Update

I have now restored my external SSD with my clone back up of Catalina and have all my apps etc back as they were.

Any tips would be appreciated with regard to installing Big Sur onto my bootable external SSD drive which has my install of Catalina.
