Hey guys, here is my annoying apple tech support story.

I've had bright spots appear behind my LCD screen for the second time this
last month.

They look like the LEDS from the backlight are pushed up too close to the LCD and sort of washout the LCD in that area. The have occurred on the left side and the right sides along the lower edges of the screen.

I'm fed up with all the repairs this laptop has needed and feeling that I paid 2000 dollars for a quality product I went to the apple store today and asked for a replacement unit.

I was told that the recurring bright spots (on top of 3 other minor repairs and 1 major repair) did not warrant a replacement unit. The manager even said that they shouldn't have fixed this problem last time because it is cosmetic and not covered by the warranty. The genius also repeated the phase "This doesn't happen by itself" (I nice way to say I did this and that they shouldn't cover it. )

The manager decided to make me feel special and say something along the lines "We'll fix it again this time because we did last time".

My warranty is running out in 6 months and I need to know what's causing this. I always transport my laptop in an incase sleeve with a shoulder strap. There have never been any external marks on my casing when these dots appear. If I put too much pressure on the screen wouldn't the middle bend in more and I would get problems there? There weren't even marks on the screen from the keyboard keys yet I put enough pressure on it to cause this without even knowing it?

The best part is I asked the man who gave me my repaired laptop back how to prevent what the manager called 'LCD bruising'. When I mentioned bright spots he said 'Oh that's a defect we cover under warranty'.

So now i'm confused and I would really appreciate it if someone could shed some light on these bright spots. How to prevent them and so on.

Im going to contact apple's customer relations on monday regarding the repeated repair trips. I have no confidence this laptop can go a long period of time without needing repairs.

Take a picture.

In my experience what you are seeing is only caused by

a) initial defect from manufacturing. It'd have been there all along

or

b) Liquid or case of super high humidity.

Ah, I would if I could. It was fixed earlier today. I tried as best as I could to describe it.

Humidity you say? That also seems odd, with the winter weather its been pretty dry. I did however notice these spots appear over time. I do graphics work so I'm always scrutinizing my screen.

The first set took 2 years to appear, on the new display they appeared after 4 months. Perhaps whatever they did with this second repair will take care of it.

Thank you for the input.

i would send it directly to apple next time. the results you get from there seem to be much more standardized. I had something similar, the dots were about the size of 2-8 pixels. I all of a sudden got someting like 12 of them.

I called apple support regarding getting this unit replaced. I spoke to a supervisor who said if i have a major hardware issue before my applecare expires they'll strongly a replacement unit. That being said he said 'LCD bruising' is not a major issue and is often times caused by the user.

That said does anyone know what the hell causes this stuff? I guess I'll just baby this machine more...

Well, 5 months later and the issue is back.

I dont know what to do at this point. I'm infinitely disappointed by this product.

I know a new 8600M is still not guaranteed to last long, and is a basically a ticking bomb inside my laptop.

I started getting light blotches on my screen in the same locations again. I'll post pictures later in the day. This is the third screen this has happened on.

My theories:

These spots occur on the lower left and right sides about the heat bar.
(design flaw?)

I also think that due to having a stiff hinge the topcase may be warping too much when I open and close it. (design flaw?)

I feel that If I contact apple regarding this they're just going to say it's my fault again. Lovely. Any advice on what my options are?
