Brightness always going down 2 ticks from max?

On my MacBook Air 2011, MBP 13" next to latest gen, MBP 13" 2 gens back, all on 10.7.x I have a problem where randomly the brightness goes down about 2 ticks. I'm always having to bring it back up to max. Why? How can I fix this?
 
system settings -> display

Do you have "automatically adjust display brightness" activated?

Does this happen when plugged in or only when running from battery?
