Hello everyone. I have posted this on the Macbook section of the forums, but feel that I need to go to a wider audience, as other models of Macs seem to have suffered similar issues. I hope this is acceptable.

Hi all. I have a 2009 Macbook, partitioned to use either 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, or Yosemite. My F1 and F2 keys no longer control brightness. I can control this from System Preferences/Keyboard. I have tried many fixes suggested by other internet sites, such as PRAM reset, SMC reset, also trying the switch toggling for function keys, which does alter the functions as it should for all other keys, but not for Brightness control.I have read in other places that this is a common problem, but no-one seems to have found a proper fix.I am sure that someone on here will know the answer ! I noticed that my original installation disk is labeled as being 10.6.4 but the version I have is 10.6.8. I may have run some sort of update a long time ago.
I did not start doing time machine backups or clones until after this issue had appeared, so I dont think my backups will fix it. I did read about a fix that worked , by using Terminal commands "sudo -H gedit etc etc, but It did not allow me to access the files needed for editing or creating. Maybe the instructions were misprinted , but I did follow them to the letter. I think that this problem occured once before, a long time ago, but seemed to sort itsself without me doing anything. I have started the computer in safe mode, and booted from Yosemite, but nothing seems to fix this. All other function keys work as they should ," sound volume" on F10, F11,F12, etc. When I tick the box for function keys in the keyboard preferences, all the keys do return to their default functions as expected, but nothing changes or happens at all with F1 and F2 keys. Perhaps I should be posting this on a more general forum, to get a wider audience, but I dont want to be shot down in flames by members for not using the correct forum for my posts, as seems to happen
sometimes. Hope someone has had the same issue and more importantly, managed to find a fix for this !
