I was wondering if there is a way I could set a hot corner to turn the screen brightness all the way down...NOT put the display to sleep.

Just an idea: Create a black picture and use it as a screen saver with a hot corner. Is that what you're looking for?
Eh, well I was trying to save the battery without putting the display to sleep per se (my mac gets probs when the display sleeps), but I guess I'll have to sacrifice the battery life then.
