For a little while now, I've noticed that my screen has been flickering as if I'm changing the brightness brighter or dimmer. It'll get dim for a second and kind of flicker and then go back to the brightness level I set. It's not a constant issue, but happens fairly frequently.

Unfortunately, I don't have AppleCare so bringing it in is somewhat out of the question. It's a first gen MacBook and I don't think the cost of screen repair is justified, unless its a lot cheaper than I imagine.

Is there anyone out there who has experienced this that has found a fix?

That's the backlight inverter. You can get a genius to replace it for you. IIRC it's about $50 usd plus labor.

This happens to my Oct '06 first gen MacBook as well, although only when I have it on the lowest screen brightness setting. It flickers rather erratically though...I just use the 2nd lowest brightness setting if I want to conserve battery.
