Brightness/volume overlay doesn't show "level"

Something I've been meaning to ask for years. Ever since I got my MacBook Pro I noticed the overlay that comes up when I adjust the brightness or sound, doesn't have any increments anymore. From what I remember from previous computers, the black horizontal bar would show little squares to indicate the level of the particular function in question.

I'm not sure if it does this because it has a Touch Bar or it's a weird bug that has never resolved itself. Is this normal operation?



P.S. It's a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) currently running 10.15.4 (19E266) but it's been like this since I got it.

OK thanks, that means it is weird then! I thought it was maybe because of the Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro that was supposed to be my feedback instead of the overlay but perhaps not!
