turn off the computer in question instantly, then on another computer download a recovery software program for OS X and then turn back on the computer in question install it and run it

I don't have another computer but fortunatley I went searching for a backup of what I deleted and found it. Thanks for the help though. What happened was I somehow managed to delete the desktop, I found my backup of the stuff on there but now it won't let me put anything on the desktop how do I fix it? thanks for the timely response the help is appreciated.

You mean you deleted the folder ~/Desktop (i.e. Desktop from your home folder)? If so you could try creating a folder called Desktop in your home folder.
