bring up boot menu by default?

when i boot, i have to hold down the option key
in order to bring up the boot menu where i can
choose my os. is there a way to have this boot
menu come up by default? how? it drives me
nuts to have to hover over the keyboard waiting
for the chime sound so i can push the option key.
