Bringing a PAYG UK iPhone to Japan

Considering that I may be moving to Japan early next year, is it worth buying the new 3G in the UK and hoping for an unlock so I could use it in Japan.

Can SIM cards be taken out of contract Japanese phones? Even if I was able to get my hands on a contract soft-bank phone?

If a thread already exists for such a topic, please redirect me. Otherwise, thanks for your input.

Yeah I'm pretty sure there will be some sort of way to unlock the 3g 2.0 software.

Basically the phone will work but you won't get any mail...Softbank has a special email address for the iphone !
