I have an SSD as my main OS drive and I just installed a 2nd HDD in my optical bay. I ejected the drive to save battery life but now I want to access something on that drive again. Is there a way to bring that drive back online without restarting or is that the only way?

I think you should be able to do that with the Disk Utility. I use a USB drive for Time Machine. I "ejected" it with the Finder. I started the DU and was able to mount the USB drive without a restart. I also did not unplug/replug-in the USB drive.
