I managed to have a fantastic time floating a lazy river and killed my 15pro in the process. Somehow it wasn’t safe in my pocket. Anywho I went and dug in my office drawer and found my iPhone 13 mini. So loaded up the latest iCloud backup and fired it up.
First take: My god this is the perfect size for me. I’m no slouch either at 6ft 210lbs.
Now I have a couple thoughts. The main reason I put the mini down was it was ALWAYS overheating. Plug it in while using CarPlay or use in the open at all and it just always gave me a notification, and this is my second one. Today doing the same regular use, just drove two hours using CarPlay, it didn’t heat up at all. So did newer iOS versions address some issue?
I haven’t done any battery testing so I’m sure it’s still kinda bad. The camera not having a zoom was my main issue but that made me also want to ask; do newer iOS versions have camera optimizations? Would pictures today with this phone look better than picks takes on the original iOS it came with?
I’ve realized I don’t care about 120hz on the phone. I can’t tell you why. On my 14” MBP and my desktop using a LG C1 48” it’s a night a day difference but maybe because most my phone use is tapping vs endless scrolling I simply don’t notice it enough to care for the phone. Even my iPads drive me nuts at lower refresh rates but for some reason the mini doesn’t.
So I guess for my $99 AppleCare+ fee I’m going to get a brand new 15 pro then turn around and sell it. Not sure what’s changed but my mini isn’t overheating and running great. I’m guessing something to do with the latest iOS versions. I also looked at the A18 pro cpu vs the A15 in the iPhone and it’s only around 15% difference single thread. Given the smaller screen with less pixels, I don’t game at all except chess or something silly, I don’t see any performance differences now. I use to get some hung keyboard entries and what not but must again have been iOS updates. The iPhone 13 mini is my favorite phone again.
Now Apple if you’re reading this. Give me a new iPhone mini with a 3x zoom instead of an ultrawide, the newest/least heat cpu and modem, and use the best lithium tech, or a mini fold and I’d gladly play double. People didn’t buy the minis because they didn’t have the best cameras.
