I have recently deleted 40GB encrypted dmg file from Time Machine drive (actually, all occurances of it). It has freed up about 600GB of space on my 1TB Time Machine drive. I have then unplugged this drive and hasn't used it.

Turns out, I need this file now. I have tried to recover it using Prosoft's Data Rescue 4. It has found 12 occurances of the file of which 9 cannot be mounted. 3 files that mount contain all the files. Catalogue structure, filenames and metadata is intact but 99% of files don't open (all of them are corrupt). I have confirmed that dmg works only with my password (it still detects wrong passwords).

Overall, I believe this dmg SHOULD work. If it was overwritten (and it wasn't, the drive was unplugged) I wouldn't be able to decrypt it, list all the files and their metadata. This is suspicious.

Does anybody have any advice?
