Just want to try to sound out some opinions on a dilemma I'm facing with regards my fiancees iPhone 3Gs.
She dropped the phone two weeks ago and broke the screen. We thought about going via insurance but decided to get the glass replaced ourselves. That all seemed fine but then we noticed that the GPS wasn't working. Having gone through the ifixit site it seems impossible to break the GPS whilst fixing the glass so I'm assuming this occurred during the initial fall. Now the touch panel is working less effectively in the right lower corner and it's difficult to know if this is drop damage, from the glass repair or something else entirely. Now obviously the fact that we have had an "unauthorised repair" compounds things a bit.
I think I've three possible solutions:
- try to go via the phone insurance, although not sure that it is that easy and they will try to affect a repair and may then question the replacement glass as invalidating the policy. This would likely be easier if the phone were obviously damaged as opposed to just not working properly.
- out of warranty repair with apple. Likely easier if the phone is obviously damaged as unauthorised modifications do make phones ineligible for the out of warranty repair (£146). Would they notice that the glass had been changed?
- trade the phone in as is in a phone shop, buy out the last two months of her contract and start a new contract with a new phone.
Am very aware that because we went for the quick solution at the outset that we are in a weaker position now so just wanted some other thoughts and ideas.
