Have a broken wd hard drive which is not accessible on my ppc/tiger imac. However it showed up in Finder when connected to my 1gen AppleTV(intel) with customized Leopard installed. That AppleTV has now broken down, so my question is, was the wd hard drive accessible due to the different hardware or osx version? Should I be able to access it by installing Leopard on the ppc mac or should I buy an Intel one? (which I hadn't planned to do quite yet).

What is the drive formatted as? Could it be a file system issue with your older Macs not being able to read it? Does it show up at all in Disk Utility?

Rather than upgrading, you could always see if it works when connected to a friend's Mac, or see if a local Apple store would let you take it in to test it.

Shows up in disk utility but greyed out. Think it's formatted HFS (non-journalized). Guess I could try at an Applestore.
